How the Course Works

The length of the New York Safety Program course is a minimum of 320 minutes. You can go through the course any day or time you want. You can also leave the course at any time and continue later from where you left off.

Once you register you have up to 30 days to study the material and complete the course.

During the course, you will be asked to identify yourself with the information given at the beginning, to ensure you are the one taking it.

At the end, you will be asked questions regarding the course content, to ensure you read it. As long as you read the material you will be able to pass. In the UNLIKELY event that you don't pass, you can retake the course as many times as you need at no additional cost.

Certificate Information

Your original certificate of completion will be mail to you so that you may submit it either to your auto insurance company for a rate discount, to TLC for Defense Driving Course credit, or to the court as part of your plea-bargain.

In addition, a course completion notice will be electronically submitted to the NY DMV to reduce up to 4 active points from your driving record and help prevent license suspension.

Benefits

Insurance Discount
If you are the principal operator of a motor vehicle, you will receive a minimum 10% reduction in the base rate of your automobile and motorcycle liability and collision insurance premiums each year for 3 years. Generally, your liability and collision premium reduction will begin immediately after presenting your certificate to your insurance company or agent, retroactive to the date you completed the course. If you present your certificate more than 90 days after course completion, the insurer may issue the premium discount effective from the date presented.

You may take the course once every 36 months to maintain insurance reduction benefits.

Point Reduction
If you have accumulated 11 points for traffic violations in an 18-month period, 4 points will be subtracted from the total point count and may help you avoid a suspension.

Point reduction applies only to points assessed for violations that occurred within the 18 months immediately before course completion. It does not affect points for earlier violations, and cannot be used as credit against future violations or points.

Points may be reduced only once in any 18-month period.

Traffic Tickets
Take the course as part of a plea bargain with the court or the state’s prosecuting attorney to reduce your top charge.

Most courts allow plea bargaining and most prosecutors will agree to a reduced plea offer.

TLC Credit
Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC) requires all new driver applicants and existing drivers to complete a Defensive Driving Course (DDC), which provides knowledge and techniques for the safe operation of a motor vehicle.

All TLC-licensed drivers must complete and pass a Defensive Driving Course at least every 3 years.
